Find the right pixel pitch for your LED video wall based on the farthest viewing distance. Uses three established methods — AVIXA DISCAS, minimum resolvable distance (MRD), and the 10× rule of thumb.
10× Rule of thumb: Viewing distance in feet ≈ pixel pitch in millimeters. A viewer 8 ft away needs roughly 2.5mm pitch or finer; 20 ft needs ~4mm; 100 ft needs ~10mm.
AVIXA DISCAS (Display Image Size for 2D Content in Audiovisual Systems): Based on element height and analytical reading. For a "Analytical Decision Making" viewer using text content, pitch should be under (viewing distance / 3438) × 1000 mm — giving roughly 1 arcminute of visual angle per element.
Minimum Resolvable Distance (MRD): Distance in meters ≈ pixel pitch in mm × 3.438 (the retinal resolution limit).
Content type adjusts the result — text-heavy content demands finer pitch than full-motion video because the eye scrutinizes stationary detail more than moving content.
For most corporate and retail installs, we design to the 10× rule and specify one pitch finer than the closest whole step. That way you're comfortable even when someone walks up to the wall.
For control rooms, executive briefing centers, and fine-pitch lobby displays, we use AVIXA DISCAS because operators will be at the wall analyzing detail for hours.
For outdoor displays and stadium boards, the 10× rule governs — there's no point buying a 6mm pitch when your closest viewer is 80 feet away.
Always round up pitch to an available standard: 0.9, 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, 1.9, 2.5, 2.9, 3.9, 4.8, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16mm are the mainstream commercial sizes.
An AVIXA designer will verify pitch against your space, source resolution, and processor chain.
